Jeff Bezos gives $50M each to Eva Longoria, Admiral Bill McRaven

11:17, March 15

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, have given $100 million as part of the annual Bezos Prize to people who make significant contributions to society.

This year's recipients are actress and entrepreneur Eva Longoria and retired Navy admiral and former chancellor of the University of Texas System Bill McRaven. Each of them will receive $50 million.

The Bezos Prize recognizes people who try to find solutions to complex problems. The first recipients of this award were Van Jones, a lawyer and CNN commentator, and chef José Andrés, who each had received $100 million in 2021. The 2022 honoree was entertainer and philanthropist Dolly Parton. There was no award for 2023.

In a statement, McRaven said he wants to use the aforesaid gift to focus on three areas: education for the children of deceased veterans, especially in the special operations community; veterans' mental health; and helping to develop future military leaders through education.

Longoria has focused on education and entrepreneurship in Latino communities. The Eva Longoria Foundation seeks to unite Latinos in low-income areas, and Longoria has a start-up fund for small businesses.
